How recommendations work
Player-count fit takes priority over rating. “Best,” “Recommended,” and “Not recommended” are the largest vote category for that count; ties favor the more cautious category. These are this reference’s labels, not a claim to reproduce BGG’s headline summary algorithm. Unknown polls remain unknown. Counts outside the publisher’s range are unsupported, even if a variant received votes.
Within each tier, ranking favors Best votes, gives Recommended votes half the credit, and penalizes Not Recommended votes twice as strongly. Small polls are discounted using votes ÷ (votes + 20). Ratings provide a smaller boost. My rating falls back to BGG average when unrated. Light/medium/heavy boundaries are local choices, not official BGG categories. A “more than N” bucket is grouped polling evidence, not separate votes for every larger group.
Expansions are opt-in and require their base games. Their ratings and votes describe the expansion; they do not automatically update the base game’s supported count. Playing times are BGG estimates, excluding teaching. The reference does not estimate conversation-friendliness.
